Welcome to Cowichan Green Community’s listing of community food resources in the Cowichan region!

Many of the following organizations provide free food and other services for those in need. We do our best to keep this list up to date. DUNCAN

Church suppers in Duncan are provided by Knights of Columbus, Duncan United Church, and Christian Reformed Church. This includes…

BBQ lunch on 2nd Sunday of the month at Warmland House on 2579 Lewis Street, Duncan.

Hot supper on 3rd Sunday of the month at Duncan United Church on 246 Ingram Street.

Hot supper on 4th Saturday of the month (except July) at Duncan Christian Reformed Church on 930 Trunk Road.

reFRESH Coupon program: Weekly $25/ food coupons may be available (currently wait list). This is a part of the reFresh Grocery Store with low cost fresh produce, groceries, frozen meals
& seeds. Monday-Friday 10am-5pm & Saturday 10am-3pm

Meals on Wheels:  Hot supper Mon. to Sat. delivered 4-5pm with frozen meal option for Sunday; regular meals $6.50, large $8.50

The Cowichan Valley Basket Society (CVBS) distributes food hampers as a part of its Grocery Hamper Program. Hamper hours are Tuesdays to Fridays 10am – 12:15pm by appointment or drop in, and Saturdays 10am – 12:30pm by pre-order (phone ahead). Call to register a day or two ahead preferred if possible.

Coffee and snacks are provided Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:45pm, and Saturday 8:30-3:45pm. Hot or bagged lunches are available Monday to Saturday 11am – 3:30pm. Sandwiches on Sundays & Stat Holidays 12-1pm by Sunday Sandwhiches. Easy carry hamper every 14 days for unhoused people.

The CVBS is a non-profit organization that depends on the support of residents of the Cowichan region. Volunteers welcome. Food donations of canned goods, dry goods, & fresh produce are always welcome. Food can be dropped off between 9AM and 4PM or a pick up can be arranged for large quantities.

Promoting Wellness and Unity the Hiiye’yu Lelum addresses the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal people by providing holistic programs and services. The House of Friendship hosts a variety of programs including Healthiest Babies Possible, daily breakfasts through the Homelessness Program, and many more that can be viewed on their website.

Provides breakfast on Monday to Friday from 6am – 8:30am. 

Food package delivery and meals available depending on the program.

Hot dinners provided at the Duncan United Church on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 5pm, including Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays on stat holidays.

Nourish Cowichan is a society that provides nutritious breakfasts to school children of the Cowichan Valley, supporting them in reaching their full potential. Nourish works with schools in the community to ensure all children have access to healthy food. School breakfast and lunch programs available, as well as weekly food hampers for students and their families. Please contact your school principle for more information

The Salvation Army, in Duncan, runs a number of programs, and are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. They have Street packs (bag of non-perishable foods and water) as needed, and food hampers available (phone or drop in to make an appointment)

Chemainus & Crofton

The Chemainus Harvest House runs two food banks each week, one in Chemainus and one in Crofton. The Chemainus Food Bank is held at the Chemainus United Church on 9814 Willow Street on Fridays 11:30AM – 1:00PM.

The Crofton Food Bank is run on Mondays, at the Warmland Church on 1586 Joan Ave. in Crofton, from 10:30AM to 11:30AM

The Cowichan Neighbourhood House Association (CNHA) is an association of neighbours helping neighbours — financed by donations, and run on volunteer spirit. Located at 9806 Willow Street in Chemainus.

Free groceries & lunch, Monday to Friday, 10:30-12:30pm

Free clothing, tents and other needs by request.

Food First offers a public herb garden, yard share and a fruit save program located behind Chemainus Harvest House. See above for more information about Harvest House.

Ladysmith

LaFF is a Family Centre for families and caregivers from Ladysmith and surrounding areas with children up to the age of 6 which provides inclusive, interactive opportunities for the development of children, families and community. They provide a free food pantry for families during programming.

Ladysmith Meals on Wheels delivers hot lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to clients. Meals are $6 each. Ladysmith Healthcare Auxiliary will pay for 2 meals per month with monthly orders.

The Ladysmith Resource Centre works to coordinate and provide services and information to enhance the quality of life of Ladysmith residents and the surrounding community. The Centre operates a foodbank every Tuesday, 4pm – 6pm, and every Wednesday, 9:30am – 11:30am.

Lake Cowichan
Fresh produce from Cowichan Green Community’s food recovery program is available Mondays and Wednesday 11AM to 12PM. They also operate a soup kitchen on Mondays and Thursdays 12PM to 2PM, and a Christmas hamper program in December.

Lake Cowichan Food Bank runs a monthly hamper 2nd Wed. of each month, 2-3:30pm.

South Cowichan: Cobble Hill, Mill Bay, Shawnigan

CMS Food Bank Society provides monthly food hampers for residents of Cobble Hill, Malahat, Mill Bay, and Shawnigan Lake. Proof of residence is required. Monthly food hampers are Tuesday 9am-2pm and Thursday 9am-11am. The CMS Food Bank gladly accepts donations of non-perishables and produce.
