Cowichan Incubator Seed Farm | Foster Richardson
In November, the Cowichan Incubator Seed Farm team was put on the spot at the Dragon’s Den style SECatalyst Gala. The team had to prepare and present a pitch before a panel of judges, vying with other top social enterprises for financial and in-kind support. We were thrilled to walk away with $8000, and a bag full assorted supports!
Preparation began weeks in advance when we were paired with our ‘pitch coach’ Jason Found, of Found Solutions, who really put us to task in challenging our assumptions and expectations around the Seed Farm’s business plan. We had our work cut out for us; there was no doubt about that. Following up on our pitch session with surveys and interviews of prospective trainees, seed buyers, and other revenue source, we were able to build a solid business case and convince the judges that the farm could be a vibrant and self-sustaining enterprise. This prize is not only a huge boost to our plan, but a great encouragement that we’re on to something exceptional.
Congratulations to the other social enterprises who also received prizes – Jane James Used Tack Shop, and the Community Closet Thrifty Store – it was a pleasure to share the stage with such hard-working and committed organisations. Thanks to everyone at SECatalyst for putting on this great and event, and to all our friends and supporters who came out to cheer us on.
