With it’s newly elected board of farmers, the Cowichan Valley Co-operative Marketplace, is now working hard to recruit new members to the co-operative, in particular, farmers or local food processors with a desire to sell their fresh produce, meats, cheeses and more online, through the co-operative’s new online marketplace: Cow-Op.ca.

The website will launch on June 1st, 2015 with the goal of offering a full compliment of Cowichan Valley fare consumers can order weekly through the site.

About the CVCM

The Cowichan Valley Co-operative Marketplace (CVCM) is a not-for-profit co-operative guided
by a board of members made up of local farmers, business owners, and community partners
including Cowichan Green Community (CGC). The Cow-Op, an initiative of the CVCM in
partnership with CGC, will allow local food lovers to shop direct from local farms and other food
producers online every week.


Reporting to the Board of Directors, the market coordinator plays an integral role in the
operation of Cow-Op.ca. The position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the CVCM.
In addition, the position works closely with the Board to ensure that strategic plans for the
organization are developed and implemented. This is an evolving position that will change over
time. Core responsibilities are listed below, however additional duties may be added as

Producer/Member recruitment, retention, and engagement

• Actively recruit producers, purchasers, and members
• Track retention rate of purchasers and producers
• Ensure all new producers complete and maintain their online listing page

Web Training and Support

• Provide initial training and ongoing support to producers on how to use Cow-Op.ca
• Prepare written training resources as required

Communications and Marketplace Promotion

• Represent the CVCM and Cow-Op.ca in meetings with external groups, building positive
community relations
• Communicate respectfully with producers, purchasers, board members, sponsors, and
other groups
• Initiate media stories on The Cow-Op using innovative techniques
• Respond positively to ad hoc media inquiries about The Cow-Op
• In conjunction with the Board, develop and implement a promotions program for The
• Respond to CVCM and Cow-Op.ca inquiries in a timely manner
• Maintain an active and engaging social media presence

Marketplace Logistics

• Design, develop, and implement market day logistics including producer drop-off, sorting
of products, and purchaser pick-up
• Recruit, train, and manage a team of volunteers to assist on market dayRecord Keeping
• Maintain accurate and complete records on the CVCM, producers, and purchasers
• Perform accounting functions including accounts receivable and payable
• Prepare and submit all required BC Registry Services filings

Grant Writing and Fundraising

• Research potential sources of grant funding and prepare proposals and applications
as required
• Proactively initiate and engage in fundraising activities

Education and Technical Requirements

• Current Foodsafe and/or Marketsafe certification, or a willingness to obtain as a
condition of being hired
• Strong computer and technical skills including social media marketing and ecommerce
• Experience using Quickbooks
• Ability to lift approximately 50lbs

Personal Requirements

• Interest and passion for local food sustainability and farm viability
• Able to communicate well, both written and orally, with a variety of groups
• Previous marketing and event coordination experience
• Time management and organizational skills are critical
• Experience working with a volunteer board
• Strong leadership skills
• Previous bookkeeping and financial management experience
• A knowledge of local farms, farmers, and food producers is an asset
• Access to a laptop to carry out job functions, including internet while working offsite

Time Commitment

This is a part-time contract position with an anticipated commitment of 20 hours per week. The
position is flexible which allows the opportunity for some work from home. The Coordinator will
be required to attend all Board meetings and work onsite for all weekly market days (Thursday).
Workload will fluctuate depending on the season and success of the marketplace. We
anticipate a reduction to 1-2 days during the winter season.
