The Cowichan Lake Community Garden had their first celebration at the garden on Saturday, May 23rd. Volunteers, funders, partners, and Cowichan Green Community (CGC) staff all gathered together and enjoyed delicious locally made Saskatoon pies from South Island Saskatoon Farm.
We thanked our volunteers and gave the garden committee a gift certificate donated from Jakes at the Lake to treat themselves with. We thanked our funders from Island Health, Tree Canada, Silk, Loblaw, and Telus as well as our partnership with the Town of Lake Cowichan.
Over the past month volunteers and workshop participants have been planting the food forest area of the garden. We have planted 3 apple trees, 2 cherry trees, and 2 hazelnut trees. Herbs have also been planted around the trees to support the trees such as comfrey to add nutrients to the soil and borage to attract pollinators. The entire area in between the trees will be mulched and planted with shrubs such as seabuck thorn and autumn olive which will fix nitrogen into the soil.
CGC delivered three workshops on planting fruit trees and food forests that have helped the community knowledge grow. Several garden committee members attended the workshops so they will be able to pass on the knowledge gained to other garden volunteers and visitors.
Beautiful wooden raised boxes made by the Lake Cowichan Secondary School carpentry class were also completed and installed at the garden. Volunteers have been planting herbs and vegetables in the shared gardens which will probably triple in size over the next few months.
The garden is looking for more volunteer help to plant the food forest, build trails and add nutrients to the soils. Please contact Erin at email@example.com or 250-748-8506 for more information.
