Growing in Popularity

Spreading manure!

It seems the more hard work we do on the land of the new Cowichan Lake Community Garden, the more people are getting interested and excited about it!

On January 17th and 24th our work parties spread over nine yards of manure, one yard of composted leaves/grass clippings, one yard of alder chips for the picnic area ‘floor’, four yards of bark mulch for the pathways, and several truckloads of leaves.

We also brought in several truck loads of cardboard which we laid on top of the grass to stop it from accessing sunlight so that it stops growing.  We plan to replace this grass with beautiful edible gardens.

Five yards of manure donated from Notta Farm

Our list of volunteers continues to grow. About eight people join each work party, with new volunteers joining in each time. Shane from Lakeside Dig ‘n Haul volunteered yet again to drive all the way into Duncan to pick up another five yards of donated manure from Notta Farm.

As the popularity of this project picks-up, we’ve learned that is has now also been in the Lake Cowichan Gazette four times, including twice on the front cover!
