This season, CGC’s FruitSave volunteers have completed a total of 26 picks and harvested over 3,500 lbs of fresh produce. Of this, approximately 1,803 lbs have been donated to local emergency food providers.
We have now exceeded the total amount of fruit picked in 2013 and, as we have many weeks (if not months) of FruitSave harvests ahead of us, we anticipate this year to be one of our most successful seasons on record.
A steady FruitSave crop this season has been plums. As the Italian Prune plums are starting to ripen, we thought it timely to share a delicious plum jam recipe. This particular plum jam recipe, sourced from the much acclaimed Food in Jars website, features the licorice flavour of star anise. Be warned, the recipe cautions readers to avoid processing the jam with the star anise. In failing to heed to this warning, the jam will take on a strong medicinal flavour (imagine strong cough syrup). Believe us, we speak from experience!
