Highlights from July

Veggie Cutters

KinPark Kid’s Camp has been in full swing since July. We’re excited for August because that means more kids and more fun activities!

Every week, campers have the opportunity to explore, plant, water, and harvest in the gardens, learning about what food plants look like, and how flavourful vegetables are straight from the plant! Every Tuesday we harvest veggies then bring them to the CGC kitchen to cook with.

As a camp counsellor, one of our proudest moments was watching the kids silently devour KinPark carrots, kohlrabi, cucumber, beans and zucchini with guacamole, hummus, and tzatziki, all chopped and prepared themselves. Other weeks, campers also had a chance to make and take home a jar of dill pickles, as well as zucchini chocolate chip muffins.

The kids lend many small hands making big tasks go at super speed! So far, campers have helped with harvesting garlic, cutting onion tops, transplanting bok choi, repotting pepper plants, and much more. Of course, having all that youthful energy around the park makes the plants grow big and strong, as the children grow in appreciation of food and gardens.


Watering the Garden Beds

Other favourite activities of the campers so far have been scavenger hunts around the park, mad science experiments, including oobleck, all forms of tag, visits from Water Woman, recycled crafts, drawings (doodle dudes!), kids yoga, and outings to the library, splash park, and swimming pool.

We’ve had a lot of positive feedback from campers and parents alike, and kids hoping to come back later this summer. Camp runs Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.
